Esteemed Delegates,
It is with the utmost pleasure that we, Pedro González and Daniel Pacheco, welcome you to this year’s United Nations Special Session at the twelfth edition of Vermont School’s Model United Nations—VESMUN XII. This out-of-the-ordinary committee takes on board the concept of a United Nations Special Session in response to a global crisis affecting the international community and the fulfillment of human rights. Nonetheless, as the real world faces more and more disarray on a daily basis, such situations demand the attention of the world stage, hence the importance of this committee.
Given its special nature, it will have a slight twist in standard procedure. For instance, crisis updates will be integrated into debates, and special delegations and representatives will be invited to give the committee its proper charm. Furthermore, as delegates in this specialized ad-hoc committee, you will have the obligation to represent your delegation to the best of your ability. It is also imperative that you invest time in understanding your assigned country’s stance, ensuring that you have a coherent position when engaging in both lobby and debate time.
Lastly, as your chair, we highly recommend that you thoroughly read this guide. Doing so will equip you with extensive knowledge of the committee and the topics under debate. Additionally, we highlight the importance of demonstrating respect and effective communication skills within the committee, as every delegate has the right to give their input and contribute to the academic exercise. We have all felt the nerves of raising our placards to speak for the first time, so please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any doubts.
